	Common Name: CUCUMBER - AFRICAN HORNED or JELLY MELON. Botanical Name: Cucumis metuliferous. Description: Also known as Jelly Melon. Brought to Australian by returning Boer War soldiers. An unusual variety producing large orange spiky fruit of subtle banana-lime flavour, with sweet jelly like flesh. Sow seeds after all danger of frosts. Sow direct in desired position. Cover seed with 5mm of soil. Space 60cm apart. Requires trellis which also reduces fungal problems. Prepare soil with compost and well-rotted manure. Cucumbers dislike acidity and need frequent watering. Pinch out terminal bud to encourage branching. Harvest daily with 2cm of stem to reduce water loss and improve storage of the fruit.
